Poster Practice

In this task we were asked to design and create a film poster from a genre of our choice with another classmate, after some discussion we finally agreed to do the horror genre using "Fireworks" and "Photoshop". We decided to do the horror genre as we shared the opinion that we would be able to capture the key conventions and characteristics of a horror scene playing on colours, characters, environment and enigma. In the foreground of the poster i have a Police line, this immediately gives the impression of danger and strong factual image that an unpleasant event has occurred, i decided to have  the police line in a bright yellow colour as it stands out in the picture drawing your attention straight away to ensure that you realise that an unpleasant event has happened. Also this contrasts with the dark dull colours in the background representing a darker power. The main backset of the picture is a gnarled wretched tree, isolated in the middle of a wood with no signs of life around it, we enhanced this effect by altering the contrast making the tree and surrounding trees to under detailed silhouettes, this creates an enigma effect by under informing the viewer of the current surroundings which is kind of linked with dramatic irony. I added a foggy effect at the bottom to add to this. On the tree there is a Hangman Noose this suggests to the viewer that there has previously been a suicide or torture at that location, this is a strong subject as it plays with emotions creating fear or bad memories. Under the hangmans Noose tere is an image of a small girl reaching up to the Noose i made the image look ghost like by toning down the opacity of the image and drawing the colour from her again making it look a mere silhouette. This creates the question of "why is she there ?" "what relation does she have to the incident" ? In the middle of the main subject tree i have placed a white face to emphasise there is an unnatural and scary element amongst the image, it creates the idea that you are always being watched when your supposedly 'alone'. It also promotes the idea of the dark environment gaining human characteristics such as life and thoughts to do what they want. I wanted my tagline to reflect on the essence of my film however also to strike the reader with a sense of realism and question. I think my tagline achieves this by stating an answer to a question asked in history. ''When Hell Is Full....The Damned Walk With Us''. The Font style its written in is very sharp and jagged developing an uninviting style of text , it mixes well with the wretched backdrop of sharp tree branches, the colour choice of white contrasts itself against the dull, gloomy background making it stand out to the viewers eye making sure it is read. Azazel's Routes - We decided to use this name as it played the image : Azazel is a Demon defined as the 'The King Of Devils and we played on the word Routes as in a pathway or the tree roots, we decided to write it so it would be concidered a route back or through the woods however belonging to Azazel as he/she/it may do what they please. I decided to have my title written in Old English script in white to represent the age of the subject being Azazel, i thought a white glow on the text would be effective as white is seen as purity and innocence which is inviting and represents the cunning of evil. Creating the poster we used a wide range of editing tools and programmes to really grab the effect we wanted to portray to the target audience, the whole is made up of four smaller images put into one, we found these images using the internet and were able to edit them at will, after altering and playing around with effects such as brightness, contrast, opacity and smudge we finally produced our images.

This is an expirimental poster that i worked on by myself with a different approach on the type of poster presented, this piece was worked on as a teaser poster not giving much away but enough to grip you into your interest, this poster was an attempt on a more ghostly theme playing around with opacity, brightness/contrast and text shake. The main backdrop is an old isolated cabin surrounded by wooded area with no-where to run. In the foreground i have an image of a ghostly male figure with a deranged physical apperance, this is a method of shock as it would throw you an idea of what the evil in the film looks like this is also an intimmedating effects as he takes up so much of the foreground dominating the image, it creates an ''in your face scene''. To the right of that image is a lady dressed in a long white gown, this suggests her innocence and purity promting that she was a victim from the past now deceased. Again i played around with the opacity settings and Hue on the woman to create a lifeless ghostly feel. The tagline '' Do you ever feel like your being watched'' like my previous one asks a question, this poster emphasises that when you feel like you are being watched you actually are by the spirits in the image, in the film this will create a dramatic irony effects for the audience.

  1. Yes, excellent practice practical work Robert. Very good analysis demonstrating the intentions behind your creative work. Read over your writing again please. You are missing capital letters at the beginning of some sentences and some of your expression could be improved i.e. 'in your face' !
